Rainy Summer Night & Virginia Carnivals

Davey & Maty's first date was her senior prom. Years later, and now married, they are some of the sweetest and coolest people I know! So I knew capturing them would be so fun and I couldn’t have been more excited. A carnival session? Yes, please! I knew we were in for a day full of laughter, nostalgia, and colorful memories.

The whole morning before our session, it was pouring rain. And not just a light drizzle—we're talking build-an-ark type rain. I kept checking the weather radar, hoping for a break. When the time came for our session, the weather channel said the rain had stopped where the carnival was. So we decided to risk it! I packed my gear, crossed my fingers, and hit the road.

The drive there it was pouring down rain relentlessly, and I couldn’t help but wonder if we’d made the wrong call. But just as I pulled into the parking lot, the skies opened up, and the sun decided to grace us with its presence. It was like the universe knew this session needed a little sunshine. SCORE!

Davey and Maty showed up with the biggest smiles, ready to make the most of whatever the day had in store. The damp air still clung to the carnival grounds, and puddles reflected the colorful lights. Far from being discouraged, they embraced the muddy pathways and the lingering droplets that gave everything a magical, fresh glow.

Rain, Rain, Don’t Go Away

Just as we were wrapping up, the weather had one final surprise in store. A gentle drizzle began to fall, then quickly turned into a short burst of rain. But instead of rushing for cover, Davey and Maty leaned into the moment. They danced in the rain, laughing uncontrollably, and I was lucky enough to capture every second of it.

The way the droplets clung to their hair and the carnival lights reflected on the wet pavement made for the most dreamy, cinematic shots. It felt like a scene straight out of a romantic movie—the kind of moment you can’t plan, but one you’re so grateful to experience.

A Love Story to Remember

What I loved most about this session was how Davey and Maty stayed completely present. They didn’t let a little rain or mud get in the way of their joy. They embraced the unpredictability of the day, and that’s what made their photos so full of life and laughter.

Their story is a beautiful reminder that life isn’t about perfect weather or pristine conditions. It’s about how you choose to show up, rain or shine. And these two? They showed up with full hearts, endless laughter, and a love that radiated through every frame.

Planning Your Own Carnival Session

If you’re considering a playful, carefree session like this, here are a few tips to make the most of it:

  1. Embrace the Weather: Whether it’s sunny, rainy, or somewhere in between, the weather can add a unique touch to your photos. Be ready to dance in the rain or bask in the golden light!

  2. Wear Comfortable Clothes: Think casual and comfortable—you’ll be walking around, playing games, and hopping on rides.

  3. Choose Your Timing Wisely: Golden hour (just before sunset) is perfect for capturing that warm, dreamy light. If possible, aim for this magical time.

  4. Be Playful: The best photos come from natural, candid moments. Don’t be afraid to get a little silly and fully enjoy the experience.

  5. Bring a Positive Attitude: Just like Davey and Maty, a go-with-the-flow mindset will ensure that you have the best time, no matter what surprises the day holds.

I’ll always remember this magical day with Davey and Maty at the carnival—the laughter, the vibrant colors, the spontaneous rainstorm, and the sheer joy that radiated from them. Their story is one for the books, and I’m so grateful I got to capture it.

Which photos do you like better? The sunny shots or the rainy, romantic ones? Let me know in the comments!
